Lolo Jones, winner of both USA championships and the World Championships in hurdle events was able to achieve her standing with lots of effort as well as a lot of patient. Jones had a difficult childhood as she was born to a single mother in a large family. The mother of Jones moved around constantly and lived for a time in the church basement. Jones was forced to move to a different school each throughout her high school years because of this nomadic existence. Jones moved away from her mom to Theodore Roosevelt to enable her to focus on her passion for track. Jones was part of four families during her time at high school, in order to learn in one place. Jones as a cellist in the school's orchestra as well as the winner of the Gatorade the track and field award for athlete of the Year was awarded the Gatorade Iowa Athlete award at the end of her high school career.
